“So my dear, what are you doing about this depression?” My doctor asks me. I’m laying on my back on a cold table, with only a thin gown covering me, preparing for my annual women’s exam; I feel vulnerable, and a little surprised. Of course, I knew I was sad, and I thought about lying on my pre-appointment form that I filled out on my mental health, but some small part of me told you not to. “Is the weight gain because of your depression?” My doctor continued. Man, like a 1-2 punch. “I’m doing yoga, I’m trying to find a nice therapist, I didn’t like my last one,” I mumble, a little embarrassed, “And yea, I’ve gained some weight because of the depression.” She launches into telling me about a wonderful therapist she knows, gives me a recommendation, and some advice on healthy eating. I look at my stomach…

This past summer marked a really special event for me: the 10th anniversary of the trip that changed me forever. It’s amazing how one decision can alter the trajectory of your life. This EF Tours Greece and Italy trip sparked my passion for traveling. To celebrate this tremendous occasion, I took a trip back, 10 years later, to where it all began: Greece. 10 Years Ago: EF Tours Greece and Italy 10 years ago, I remember sitting in my high school Biology II classroom, studying the kinds of animals that live in the deep sea. My LAX coach came into the class to make an announcement. He informed us that he would be taking a group of graduating seniors, and a handful of rising seniors, on an EF Tours trip to Italy and Greece in June of 2008. And he was inviting everyone in the class. For the first time in…

Anthony Bourdain and My Favorite Part of Travel Anthony Bourdain died on June 8th, 2018. On June 9th, 2018, I spent a whole day exploring some of the most stunning street art in Lima Peru. His death hit me like a punch in the stomach. I admired him for his love and passion for travel, food, people, and different cultures. Throughout his career he taught people not to be afraid of others that were different. He encouraged respect, and understanding. That night, I began to review all of the episodes I’ve ever watched of Bourdain’s shows, and poured over old interviews. It was like watching an old friend through the screen. In a USA Today nterview that I watched, Bourdain was explaining his favorite way to travel. He said (paraphrased): “If you have an itinerary when you travel, nothing magical or life-changing is going to happen to you. When I…

Being Overweight and Traveling My name is Kelly, and I am overweight-that was not easy to say, and this post was not easy to write. I’m embarrassed about my weight, I don’t ever talk about it to my friends, and I try and avoid the subject with my family. Why? Because I am ashamed I can’t fix this aspect of my life. I do not want to write an entire post about what I’ve experienced being overweight and traveling. But, I feel the need to present my experiences on this much-avoided topic, because I know I am not the only one who feels this way. And, I want to encourage others, no matter what their size, to travel. Traveling is my passion. But, being overweight and traveling presents a lot of unique challenges and emotions. On one hand, you are traveling, growing, learning more about world, meeting amazing people, learning…
